Mary Ann Grossmann, of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, had this to say about Vencil:
""Vencil" by Frank Shima (North Star Press of St. Cloud, $16.95): Novels narrated by boys who grew up on farms are a dime a dozen in Minnesota. But Shima, who lives in Pine Springs, Minn., does an especially nice job of telling a story filled with family love. And he does it in just 173 pages.
Jimmie, the 6-year-old protagonist, is growing up on a dairy farm in the 1950s. His Czech family has no modern conveniences, but he's happy. He especially loves his Uncle Vencil, who wanders between farms until he goes missing. Jimmie's worried parents learn the man is in jail in the Twin Cities, and Jimmie finds that city life can't beat the quiet of the farm. The first chapter of "Vencil" won the 1987 Lake Superior Writer Series fiction competition."
